Dr. Mohammad Atiq ur Rahman is an urban planner by profession. He got B.Sc. degree in City & Regional Planning from UET in 1991 and M.Sc. in Urban Development Planning & Environmental Management from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok in 1997. He holds doctorate degree in Social Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. Dr. Atiq has experience of working as a planner and researcher both in Pakistan and abroad. He has served in the Ministry of Housing and Physical Planning, Govt. of Punjab.
As a researcher, he has worked at AIT, Bangkok, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. He has also worked with Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) postdoctoral research fellow at Institute of Geo-resources and Environment (GREEN), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan. After around 13 years of learning and serving abroad, Dr. Atiq returned to Pakistan and joined Environmental Science Department, Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) as assistant professor.
Dr. Atiq is founder of Pakistan Society of GIS (PSGIS). He is Executive Director of Urban Development and Environmental Research Center (UDERC) which acts as an outreach center of several universities in Tokyo. He is founder of National Institute of Social Engineering and GIS (NISEGIS) in collaboration with Japanese counterpart research labs. This institute offers short courses. His research interests include GIS applications to urban and environmental management, community based disaster risk management, social transformation through innovative environmental technologies and reduction of green house gases etc.
